Before You, There Were Women Who Shaped Your Story
Women’s History Month Reflections
Before you… there were women who shaped your story.
A mother who guided you.
A grandmother whose traditions still live in your home.
A sister, daughter, mentor, or cousin whose influence continues through the generations that follow.
March is Women’s History Month, a time to pause and recognize the women whose lives quietly shape families. Their leadership often happens in ways the world does not always see. Through everyday moments. Through resilience. Through traditions that become part of a family’s identity.
When you look closely, every family carries these stories.
The recipes passed down from a grandmother’s kitchen.
The encouragement a mother offered at exactly the right moment.
The laughter shared between sisters that carries through decades.
The values that become woven into the way a family lives, gathers, and cares for one another.
These women do more than influence individual lives. They shape the culture of a family.
Their history becomes your family’s story.
This Women’s History Month, I have been reflecting on the women in my own life who shaped the way I see family, creativity, and storytelling. Their influence continues to guide how I approach my work today as a family fine art portrait photographer.
Through family fine art portrait photography, I see every week how powerful those stories are.
I photograph mothers standing beside daughters as they enter senior year.
Grandmothers celebrating milestone anniversaries surrounded by three generations.
Sisters and cousins gathering at Colorado resorts for reunions that reconnect families across time and distance.
These moments are not simply photographs.
They are acknowledgments.
They say: I see what you built.
They say: Your influence matters.
They say: The love you gave shaped who we are.
Family portraits preserve more than appearances. They preserve relationships, traditions, and values that define a family across generations.
Your family is your greatest masterpiece.
And often, it is the women who gave so much that helped create it.
A Slideshow Honoring the Women Who Shaped My Story
In honor of Women’s History Month, I created a short slideshow sharing the women who shaped my own family story. My grandmothers and my mother each lived very different lives, yet each contributed something meaningful that continues to influence the generations that followed.
Their stories are part of my story.
And chances are, as you watch, you will begin thinking about the women in your own family whose lives shaped yours.
I invite you to watch the slideshow on my YouTube channel and reflect on the women who shaped your family.

As you watch, consider this:
Who are the women whose history… or herstory… shaped your family?
Their stories deserve to be remembered.
This March, who will you celebrate?
And how will you make her visible?
A limited number of Family Legacy Portrait Commissions are reserved each season.
