Honoring the Legacy of Service A Veterans Day Reflection

Veterans Day invites us to pause.
To remember.
To honor the women and men who have chosen to serve with courage, conviction and a willingness to carry responsibility most of us will never fully understand.

For many of us, service is not an abstract concept. It is personal.

My son served two combat tours in Afghanistan as an Army Ranger. Watching someone you love step forward into danger is a deeply complex experience. There is pride. A steady and unwavering pride. There is also the quiet ache of waiting, hoping and holding steady. Service is never carried by the service member alone. It is held by the family, the community and the ones who keep the light on at home.

I have also had the honor of photographing families whose stories of service live across generations. One of these families is Christiane's.

Christiane served in the United States Air Force. Years ago we created her family's portraits on their mountain property in Colorado. The land held their history, their laughter and their memories. The mountains stood strong behind them just as her family had stood strong through change and transition. Recently her son chose to serve as well and joined the United States Navy.

Service in this sense is not only a duty.
It is a legacy.

It is the passing down of values.
Courage. Devotion. Loyalty. Love of country. Love of family.

And that is why I do the work I do.

Portraiture is not only about celebrating the present moment. It is about honoring the story that brought a family to this moment and preserving the love that will carry them into the future.

Families who serve understand something important:

Time together is sacred.

When everyone is finally in the same room or under the same open sky there is a moment where love settles. Where you can feel the belonging. The continuity. The lineage made visible.

That is the moment I photograph.

For Military and Veteran Families What Makes A Legacy Home Art Commission Different

Many families come to me because they want something deeper than a photograph. They want a portrait that feels like their family. They want artwork that will live in the heart of their home and remain part of their story.

A Legacy Home Art Commission is a bespoke portrait experience created to

  • Honor family history identity and devotion

  • Capture the emotional connection between generations

  • Create heirloom artwork intended for a central place in the home

  • Preserve the love that lives beyond any single moment

This is not posed or performative.
It is personal. Meaningful. Enduring.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we need to wear uniforms in the portraits

Not necessarily. Some families choose to. Many do not. The focus is on the connection and the love. If uniforms medals or keepsakes hold meaning for your family they can be included subtly and reverently.

Can we include multiple generations

Yes. Multi generation portraits are at the heart of this work. The emotional story deepens when lineage is seen together.

Where do the portraits take place

Many families choose meaningful places including

  • Their home

  • Their mountain property

  • A family ranch or retreat

  • A loved and familiar outdoor space

The place should feel like part of your legacy.

What if we feel nervous about being photographed

You do not have to know what to do. I guide everything with grace and ease. The beauty comes from presence not posing.

How is the artwork installed in the home

I help you select scale framing finishes and placement. Most families choose to install their portrait in the great room where love and memory live at the center of the home.

Do you travel for commissions

Yes. I frequently travel for legacy portrait commissions across Colorado and beyond.
